Bali Beginnings is an intentionally small treatment centre. We work with Australians who are dealing with drug or alcohol addiction. There are never more than eight clients here at one time, and that's by design. It's the only way you can really get to know people and do the work properly.
Bali Beginnings is a drug and alcohol treatment centre in Uluwatu, in southern Bali. We take up to eight clients at any one time, no more. That cap matters. It means we get to know each person properly, and it means we can be a bit selective about who we take. The people who are here actually want to be here — which is a big part of why the program works.
Howard, who founded the place, is over 12 years sober from alcohol himself — a "grateful alcoholic", is how he puts it. He set Bali Beginnings up because he wanted to build the kind of rehab he wished he'd had when he was trying to give up: small, properly clinical, in a setting that actually supports recovery, and at a price well below comparable Australian residential programs.
The programme itself was designed by Dr Terry Spokes (Oxford-trained Clinical Psychologist) and is run day to day by a multi-disciplinary team of psychologists, doctors and recovery coaches with international experience.

See Full List →Recovery isn't really about stopping the drinking or drug use — that's the easy bit, in some ways. The harder bit is understanding the patterns underneath: what the drug or the drink was actually doing for you, and what you put in their place. That's where most of the work happens here.
One-to-one sessions with qualified psychologists. We use CBT, ACT and CFT — the specific approach gets matched to what each client actually needs.
24-hour on-site medical supervision, including a safe, medically managed detox where it's needed.
Yoga, meditation, acupuncture, reiki, sound healing and breathwork. The clinical work is the spine of the program — but the rest of it matters too.
Recovery coaches work with clients through the 12-step program, including local AA and NA meetings off-site.
Two years of structured aftercare. Honestly, in many ways the residential stay is the easy bit — the journey really starts when you leave us. The months after you go home are when most relapses happen, and that's the period we put the most effort into.
From your first phone call right through to aftercare two years later, we stay involved.
A private, no-pressure call with our admissions team to talk through what's going on for you.
Our clinical team runs a full assessment. The aim isn't to slot you into a template — it's to get to know you, and build a treatment plan around what you actually need.
A structured residential programme. Psychotherapy, medical care, group sessions, and the daily work of getting to know yourself sober.
Two years of structured support to help you stay on track and rebuild things back home.
